After 14 months of marriage, Britney Spears and Sam Asghari divorced, and Variety has learnt that the pop singer is being represented by a dream team of Hollywood solicitors as she gets ready for a split.
According to Variety, Spears has recruited top celebrity divorce attorney Laura Wasser and will continue to work with Mathew Rosengart, a formidable lawyer who is a former federal prosecutor and famously freed Spears from her conservatorship and her father's supervision.
Variety's request for comment was not immediately answered by Wasser or Rosengart.
Spears accepted Asghari's marriage proposal in September 2021, and the two were wed in June 2022. Asghari is a trainer, model, and actress who has acted in the television programmes "Black Monday" and "Hacks." After first meeting on the set of Spears' 2016 music video for the song "Slumber Party," from her "Glory" album, they had been dating for more than five years.
Variety contacted Asghari for comment over the separation, but they never got back to them.
Spears was still in a conservatorship when she got engaged to Asghari. However, Rosengart's vigorous and successful efforts to have the court suspend her father, which was the first step in the eventual termination of the conservatorship, put her on a path to soon being free from the legal arrangement.
Spears claimed she did not have permission to marry Asghari and have more children when she testified towards the end of her 13-year conservatorship because her finances and essentially every aspect of her life were under the control of her conservators, including her father, Jamie Spears. "I want to advance gradually and have the genuine thing; I want to be able to get married and have children. Spears begged the judge in June 2021, "I was told that while I'm under the conservatorship, I'm not allowed to be married or have children.
Legal professionals told Variety at the time of the couple's engagement that a marriage licence would have required to be granted by conservators since, under a conservatorship, the conservatee does not have the authority to enter into any kind of agreement on their own. An attorney clarified, "Technically, she can't approve the marriage licence while she is under conservatorship."
For the first time in more than 13 years, a judge allowed Spears the authority to executive paperwork on her own in December 2021, the month after her conservatorship was lifted. This included the authority to approve a marriage licence.
Rosengart had told reporters in front of the courthouse, "She has the power to do whatever she wants to do." The pair was hitched about a year later.
In front of about 60 guests, including Madonna, Selena Gomez, Drew Barrymore, and Paris Hilton, Spears and Asghari were married in a private ceremony at Spears' house in Thousand Oaks, California. Jamie Lynn Spears, her sister, and her mother Lynn Spears were not present.
Asghari was Spears' third husband. The ex-couple is not a parent of any shared children. Two months before their wedding, in April 2022, Spears and Asghari made the announcement that she was expecting. The singer announced that she had miscarried the following month.
Sean and Jayden, the celebrity's teenage sons, were born to her second husband, Kevin Federline, a backup dancer she wed from 2004 to 2007. In 2005, "Britney and Kevin: Chaotic," a brief-lived reality series, featured the pair as its stars. The singer's first marriage, which lasted a total of 55 hours, was annulled in 2004. It was to her childhood buddy Jason Alexander. Alexander disrupted Spears' marriage to Asghari in 2022 and was detained for trespassing at her house.
The "Baby One More Time" singer has previously worked with Wasser, who has represented a number of A-list clients in their high-profile divorces, including Kim Kardashian, Kevin Costner, Angelina Jolie, Johnny Depp, and more. Spears first engaged Wasser's services when she was battling Federline for custody of their two sons.
Regarding Spears' recent professional activities, the pop icon has released two songs after the end of her conservatorship: "Hold Me Closer," a duet with Elton John, and "Will."I.AM's "Mind Your Business." Spears has a much-anticipated tell-all memoir coming out in October for which she signed a historic multi-million dollar book contract.
Spears and Asghari haven't spoken out about their breakup.
